At a meeting of the Solf Government Society held in

Canton on the 5th instant a Ur. Nok described as the

official representative of your firm produced a letter which has read out to the agro-bly, purporting to be a

textual translation of your letter to me dated June 1. last

in connection with tho Fabshan caso.

Yo will observe that the translation în qu phion copy

of which I enclose with the Chinese text in not only in mony respects inaccurate but that it ronerally gives a nisloading version of the original text, calculated 150 convey an onbirely erroneo s impression of the sunce of

your communication.

As I bake it for granted that bufore communicating: an official letter to me to a Chinese society you would satisfy yourselves as to the accuracy of the runslation I shall bo obliged if you will be good enough to plain the circumstances undor which this garbled version of your

letter came to be read out at the meeting referred to and subuo gently published in all the Cariton newspapers.

I may mention that the Purtuguese Commul Conural at Canton has officially drama attention to this lobber asking to be informed whether or no it is gon-ino.
